As a Director, Business Development, you will be responsible for supporting our National Litigation practice, focusing on:
Strategic Planning
- Developing and implementing marketing and business development strategies regionally and nationally to grow business with existing clients and secure new clients including: strengthening relationships; building brand awareness; and developing and executing marketing and BD plans in collaboration with partners.
- Working in collaboration with firm leaders to support the execution of the firm’s overall Strategic Plan and specific annual market plans for key growth initiatives, including collaborating with the applicable Regional Managing Partners, Practice Group Leaders, Industry Group Leaders and partners to develop and execute on annual market plans. Continuously analyzing and adjusting annual market plans as needed to increase effectiveness.
Business Development
- In collaboration with firm lawyers, leveraging market and industry knowledge to identify and pursue opportunities with current and prospective clients. Help partners understand and fulfill the role of the client Relationship Partner, including assembling client teams and identifying and acting on opportunities to deepen and grow the client relationship.
- Understand and leverage the full platform of the firm to deepen client relationships and win new mandates, including a deep understanding of the business of law, client needs and preferences, business lines (practices, industries, regions), expertise/capabilities of the firm’s lawyers and the full suite of marketing and BD tools and resources available.
- Promoting client service excellence through implementation of the Client Experience program.
- Conducting and assessing in-depth market analyses to identify growth opportunities and presenting findings and recommendations to partners.
- Deepening understanding of client needs through direct engagement in the market via external and internal events and associations. Devising and executing on client and internal events and programs based on this understanding, in collaboration with firm lawyers.
- Providing strategic advice and guidance to lawyers preparing for client presentations and responding to RFPs.
- Coaching lawyers individually and in groups on successful business development and profile-building techniques to build their practice and enhance the firm’s brand, increase market credibility, deepen client relationships and win new business.
Clients & Markets Team
- Leading, managing, coaching and providing professional development to direct and indirect reports.
- Recruiting, hiring, developing, coaching and managing a high performing team of business development professionals.
- Participating in Clients & Markets team meetings and leading selected national operational initiatives and projects including taking our best in class BD and marketing processes to even another level by leveraging legal knowledge and expertise.
As our ideal candidate, you will distinguish yourself by the following profile:
- Undergraduate University degree and Law degree required.
- At least 10 years of experience in client relations and business development required, either as in-house counsel and/or as a practicing lawyer/business developer in a law firm.
- Management experience required, including leading and motivating teams.
- Large law firm experience in a business development leadership capacity preferred.
- Strong strategy development, critical thinking, creativity, and business and political acumen.
- Execution focus--demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action and achieve results.
- Ability to motivate and manage individuals and teams, anticipate and solve problems as they arise and implement conflict resolution in a constantly changing environment.
- Client service mindset and experience working with, and presenting to, executive-level clients.
- Ability to handle an extensive workload with competing priorities and deadlines.
- Experience in a partnership structure and/or matrix environment is critical.
- Exceptional communication skills (verbal and written).
