This position is based out of Vancouver. McCarthy Tétrault employees benefit from a hybrid work environment.

 

Salary : $80,000 - $90,000 annually

 

As a Research Specialist, Competitive and Legal Intelligence, you will be:

  • Providing legal and competitive intelligence (CI) research and analysis to Firm lawyers, students and internal departments. Conducting research interviews, identifying sources, performing research, and delivering value-added results to lawyers and key stakeholders
  • As a team member of the Research and Information Cohort, you serve as the primary Team liaison with the Business Development (BD) Cohort assigned to you, and are responsible for:  
    • Engaging on a regular basis with the BD Cohort to gain a deeper understanding of the relevant business lines, clients and growth opportunities.
    • Bringing ideas and updates to the BD Cohort based on what is happening in their Strategic Operations Cohort, and vice versa.
  • Collaborating with other team members on research strategies, discussing with requestors, and choosing and using online and print information resources and technology for maximum benefits.
  • Contributing to the design and execution of teaching, training and onboarding on regarding research methodology and resources for students and lawyers.
  • Staying abreast of cutting-edge information resources and technology.  Identifying, examining and evaluating resources for their use in the provision of a wide variety of research services.
  • Providing a broad spectrum of Firm-wide market intelligence and current awareness services (alerts, newsletters).  Collecting, maintaining and delivering information to achieve a competitive edge.
  • Working collaboratively with other research specialists on research requests and project-related work as a member of the Firm-wide Research and Information team.
  • Working collaboratively with the Clients & Markets/Client Service Innovation on special initiatives and projects.
  • Mentoring library team members and law students, where applicable, in research methodologies and resources.
  • Docketing time.
  • Attend and present recent market & industry developments during Market meetings. Responsible for Competitive Intelligence related to Power, Oil & Gas, Projects, and Infrastructure.
  • Other duties as assigned.

As our ideal candidate, you will distinguish yourself by the following profile:

  • Master’s degree in information sciences (MIS or MLIS). Candidates with a Library Technician Diploma and a minimum of five (5) years legal and business research experience may also be considered.
  • MBA or a law degree (JD/LLB) is an asset.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a professional services environment.
  • Knowledge of main CI and legal resources used in a legal environment.
  • Familiarity with the law, legal systems and legal processes of Canada, the United States and Commonwealth/civil law jurisdictions.
  • Familiarity with legal and competitive intelligence research methodologies and resources in print and electronic formats, including familiarity with the structure, functionality and use of free and fee-based online legal and business information resources (including but not limited to WestlawEdge AI, Lexis Advance, Capital IQ, Inframation, and Mergermarket.
  • Proficiency in both oral and written communications.
  • Proven ability to share knowledge and ideas with clients and colleagues in one-on-one and group settings.
  • Strong time and project management skills.  Ability to work effectively on multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in the use of legal, corporate and industry databases.
  • High-level analytical skills.
