We are recruiting for an IP Clerk to join our team in our Toronto or Vancouver offices. The successful candidate must have a minimum of 3 years in trademark, and will be responsible for Filing trademark assignments, and processing incoming correspondence from CIPO, USPTO, WIPO, and foreign associates. McCarthy Tétrault employees benefit from a hybrid work environment with 3 days in the office per week.


As an IP Clerk, you will be:

  • Emailing the assistants the daily due dates for their respective lawyers and agents and following-up when necessary.
  • Compiling from the main report, the trademark watch reports for each individual lawyer/agent for both Canada and the United States.
  • Processing incoming correspondence from CIPO, USPTO, WIPO, and foreign associates and entering their relevant data and deadlines into the PATTSY database.
  • Proofing the wares and services listed in approval notices and those of the notice of allowance against those in the trademark application.
  • Preparing and filing trademark applications and amended trademark applications.
  • Renewing trademark registrations and assisting with Nice classifications during renewal.
  • Assisting with trademark renewal reminders.
  • Filing trademark assignments, security agreements, and other documents with CIPO, USPTO, and WIPO.
  • Conducting searches on CIPO, USPTO, and WIPO databases
  • Updating client contact information in PATTSY.
  • Creating new letters in PATTSY.
  • Backing-up duties for trademark related tasks for assistants

As our ideal candidate, you will distinguish yourself by the following profile:

  • Completion of a university degree, college diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Three to five years of previous trademark experience.
  • Great attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
